Australia joins Bonneville recall on fire risk

Triumph Motorcycles Australia has joined a worldwide recall of a “small number” of Street Twin and T120 Bonneville motorcycles over a fuel leak and fire risk.

The official global statement says the recall affects only 6% of the 900cc Street Twin motorcycles and 0.002% of 1200cc T120 bikes sold so far.

Last Triumph Motorcycles Australia could not confirm if any of bikes in Australia are affected, but it now appears it is, indeed, a small number with only five affected owners notified.

While the recall is small, it is a PR blow to the new range of Bonnevilles which have been met with much enthusiasm by the media and the market.

The recall is over a possible fire caused by a fuel leak.

The wiring in the tank that powers the fuel pump may have damaged insulation and result in fuel entering the wiring and travelling down the harness, outside of the tank and dripping from the connector at the main harness.

A fuel leak, in the presence of an ignition source such as an electrical short increases the risk of a fire.

There are no reports of any incidents resulting from the fault.

Recall notices are issued by the manufacturer through a voluntary industry code under the ACCC.

Despite hundreds of recalls by various automotive manufacturers, none has ever been mandatory.  All have been issued by the manufacturer.

While any recall is not good news for the manufacturer, it shows that they are largely diligent in fixing problems.

If you believe there is an endemic problem with your bike that should be recalled, contact the ACCC on 1300 302 502.
